ASIA-PACIFIC COOPERATION IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC

SAINT PETERSBURG, December 8, 2020 – At the end of November, representatives of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «VNIIM n.a. D. I. Mendeleev» took part in the a seminar for directors of national metrological institutes and in the General Assembly of the regional metrological organization «Asia-Pacific Metrological Program» (APMP). VNIIM represents Russia in APMP as a member of the Assembly.

According to Anton Pronin, head of FSUE «VNIIM n.a. D. I. Mendeleev», the topic of the seminar for the Directors of APMP NMIs "Regional cooperation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic" aroused special professional and public interest. Foreign experts discussed the importance of accurate measurements in the fight against the pandemic, new professional challenges and international cooperation, and the integration of metrology into global social processes.

Reports were presented on metrological traceability for COVID-19 testing and related measurements, improvement of the reference base in the field of thermometry and bionalytic research, were given examples of bilateral work of NMIs with the health sector. Participants of the seminar have also noted increasing public awareness of metrological activities and outlined areas of cooperation between global and regional metrological communities.

Martin Milton, Director of BIPM, spoke about new coordination activities during the COVID period. Head of National Institute of Metrology (China), APMP Chairman Fan Xian spoke about the Chinese experience in the fight against coronavirus. He noted that metrology plays an irreplaceable role in the field of public health, but effectively fulfills its tasks only through interaction with other stakeholders. During the work of the General Assembly were presented reports of the organization and technical committees and defined an Action plan for the coming year.
