BRICS COUNTRIES AGREED TO DEVELOP COOPERATION ON STANDARDIZATION

MOSCOW, August 21, 2020 – On August 19, Alexey Abramov, head of Rosstandart, chaired a meeting of heads of national standardization bodies of the BRICS countries in the format of a videoconference with the support of the Roscongress Foundation.

The event was attended by Ricardo Fragoso, Director General of the Brazilian Association for Technical Standards (ABNT), Director General of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) Jodi Scholtz, Vice administrator of the China Standardization Administration (SAC), Director General of the Department of Standardization of Innovation Management of the Chinese Market Regulation Administration (SAMR), Gan Cui, Deputy Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), D. K. Agarwal.

The experts discussed the mechanisms for developing cooperation between the five countries in the field of standardization, and noted the role of national bodies in responding to emergencies, such as the pandemic of the new COVID-19 coronavirus infection.

For example, in order to speed up the introduction of standards for medical devices and personal protective equipment in Brazil during the pandemic, the period for public discussion of draft standards was reduced from 60 to 30 days. In India, a number of new standards have been adopted for medical devices, and a standard is being developed for the collection and disposal of used personal protective equipment. China has launched a number of initiatives to develop international standards, including requirements for contactless delivery and for the design and construction of infectious diseases departments in hospitals and hospitals.

In Russia, during the most acute period of the pandemic, in order to increase the production of medical devices and personal protective equipment, was opened free access to more than 50 international, interstate and national standards, as well as unprecedented access to the technical specifications of manufacturers of personal protective equipment.

The heads of relevant departments also discussed the draft Memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of standardization between the BRICS countries and the work of the information platform in the field of standardization in the countries of the Association.

"BRICS is a recognized format for international cooperation, which defines a number of priorities, including in terms of ensuring international information security, countering terrorism, developing the integration of payment systems, exploring outer space, and strengthening cooperation in the energy sector. Standardization tools can make a real contribution to the implementation of the above – mentioned priorities," Alexey Abramov stressed.
